Study Programme in Electrical Engineering with Practical Training
Mathematics are extremely important in electrical engineering studies. In the first semesters you will have a lot of mathematics and physics classes, as well as a few chemistry and mechanics classes. Many universities and universities of applied sciences offer preliminary courses in mathematics and physics. You should also enjoy working with computers. Being tech-savvy goes without saying. In electrical engineering you will work a lot with very large and very small values. Often it is hard to imagine these. Therefore, abstract thinking should be something you are comfortable with. English language skills are also a must. In electrical engineering, things are evolving incredibly fast, just think about the development of computers. In other words, you must be prepared to life-long learning.
- Qualifications you require for studying electrical engineering
Usually you need to have completed a high school diploma or vocational high school diploma in order to study electrical engineering. If you have completed an apprenticeship as a technician or a master craftsman’s diploma, you can also pursue your studies without a high school diploma.
- How long does it take to graduate and what qualifications are there?
The Bachelor’s programme usually takes six or seven semesters. Of these semesters, one is usually a practical semester, which you can also complete abroad. If you study at a university, the degree earned will be a “Bachelor of Science” (B. Sc.), the degree at universities of applied sciences will be a “Bachelor of Engineering” (B. Eng.). You can also enrol in a study programme in electrical engineering as a teacher, then your degree will be “Bachelor of Education” (B. Ed.).
After completing your Bachelor’s degree, you can either look for a job or continue your studies in a Master’s programme. The standard period of study for a Master’s programme is four semesters. Again, there are two different options for degrees: Either a “Master of Science” from a university or a “Master of Engineering” from a university of applied sciences. Both Master’s degrees qualify for a doctorate.
